Solstice Canyon Engagement Session | Niaz + Shawn
There comes a time (or rather, many times) in a wedding photographer’s career where you hear a proposal story that makes your heart skip a beat. This is one of those times that as I was reading their story, I found myself smiling from ear to ear.
Days like this make my heart full and make me feel grateful to be able to call this a career.
Shawn and Niaz’s friendship began over a decade ago at a family friends party. From the day they met, they instantly clicked. Their special friendship blossomed and continued over the next several years. Even though they were apart from one another, living in different cities, they found a way to always remain in one another’s lives. Five years later they went on their first date.
The day before their five year anniversary, Shawn told Niaz to get dressed up for a romantic dinner. He then blindfolded her and drove to El Matador State beach in Malibu, California. He led her down the steps (which there are a lot of!) and finally removed her blindfold at the bottom.
When Niaz opened her eyes, she was beautifully confronted by a group of signs that Shawn had covered in all of the sentimental things he had collected over the years since they have known one another. Mementos such as tickets and cards that they had written each other.
He then got down on one knee and popped the question. After she said yes, their family appeared from behind the rocks where they had been hiding to congratulate them and joined in on the celebration. It was, without a doubt, the perfect proposal that Niaz had dreamed of.
Niaz asked me if they could incorporate two different looks into their engagement session. She really wanted a boho styled shoot, something very emotive and romantic. However, because they are getting married in Lake Tahoe in April of next year, she also wanted something that would fit into that fall aesthetic. I suggested Leo Carillo and Solstice Canyon to bring both of these looks together in one photo shoot.
I have to say, I am in love with how their photos turned out. The two very different and opposing styles meshed perfectly to bring all aspects of their personalities out and in telling their story.
Sometimes it is great to have two completely different looks and locations because you get to really show the various aspects of your clients personalities and of their story as a couple. It can bring their session full circle, so-to-speak, to really embrace who they are.
Congratulations Niaz and Shawn! We are so excited for next year and your beautiful wedding.
